Attentive to the mythical aspects of the surrounding jungle, Wong foregrounds the tropical rainforest as a protagonist, describing a Nanyang homeland that is the result of the localization of rural Chinese over time. His use of the Nanyang evokes the long-standing oceanic migratory route from China to the Malay Archipelago, particularly at the turn of the twentieth century, and the subsequent settler ecology that developed in the tropical jungles of Malaya. This ecological history, left out of the British hearts and minds narrative, serves as the background to poems that describe how resettlement created an estrangement from the land, which led to the permanent loss of a rural home-land. Reclaiming the Nanyang landscape as a settlers’ past prior to resettlement, Wong seeks to recover this history. He does so by using extensive botanical tropes when describing the migrant histories of rural Chinese and their subsequent fates after forced resettlement. Responding to their uprooting, he writes: “Please be patient, once my efforts to fill the land has been completed, there will be more scenery from the Nanyang that will grow.”
Wong’s essay collection, Durians Are Not the Only Fruit (2013), shows a reverence for land and nature through an ethnographic detailing of the relationship between Nanyang migrants and their tropical surroundings. Situating Nanyang settlers as one of many diverse communities that inhabited the tropics, he describes a homeland which was adapted to the tropical landscape. This homeland retained a sense of mystery about the jungle and a gap between settlement and nature, expressed in a sacredness of place that Wong describes as “native mysticism.” The mythologizing of the local environment – “a mysticism that mingles with everyday life” – is central to his writings on the Nanyang homeland. For him, “Nanyang represents the new culture that arose after immigrants from China came to live amongst tropical rainforests, to set down roots in a strange land, intermingling with the local customs and culture, with magical results.
