Designing on a slope. Cut too deep and you destabilize the ground. Fill too high and the structure fights gravity for its entire life. When I position the plinths, set the column angles, and trace the roofline, I am responding to what the terrain is already telling me. The layout is just where all of that finally gets to balance.

In Candolim, Goa, Sangrah Design Studio designs a compact apartment shaped by travel memory, tropical materiality and restrained old-world detailing. The most effective tropical architecture often begins with one clear question. How should people feel in the space every day? In this residential concept, the answer led to a softer architectural language shaped by curves, greenery, shade, and openness. Each balcony becomes part of a larger environmental strategy that supports comfort, visual calm, and a stronger connection to nature. Instead of treating the landscape as an accessory, the design integrates it into the building experience from the first level to the top floor. This helps transform the project from a residential block into a more livable and restorative environment. For us, architecture is not only about form. It is about shaping better rhythms of living through climate-responsive design.

Ancestral skeletal forms are effective due to their responsiveness to environmental factors and community needs. In cliffside resorts, these dynamics become more pronounced as engineering demands increase, geometric constraints become stricter, and material cycles accelerate. Nevertheless, the sculptural language of vernacular assemblies continues to inform how shared spaces achieve a sense of groundedness and openness. I am currently compiling references to support a more comprehensive study.
