In the Name of Allaah to whom belongs all praise, may He make good mention of and bestow peace upon His Messenger. 

Sunday’s senseless and horrific attack on a Quebec City mosque was an act of brutality and terrorism. It was an act of slaughter where a young man indiscriminately killed Muslims, at a time of worship, in a place of sanctity, with children running around the prayer hall. This is terrorism, plain and simple. Terrorism is not a religious doctrine. It is a savage, evil act, in which revolutionaries seek to impose their world view on the rest of us. Acts of terrorism has been committed “in the name of al-Isām,” in the name of Christianity, for racist objectives, and of course for political motives. Details have yet to emerge as to why the shooter, in custody, Alexandre Bissonnette, decided to kill and injure Muslims engaging in evening prayers. Nonetheless, it should be condemned, just as we condemned the Ottawa terror attack, when a ceremonial (unarmed) guard was gunned down by a terrorist. We do not say Muslim or Isāmic or Jihād because the shooter represented none of the aforementioned. Likewise, this evil young man, who turned his automatic weapon towards the backs of unsuspecting worshippers that fateful Sunday evening is not representatives of Whites, Christians, Quebecors or Canadians. These two extremist acts have one thing in common: the use of brute violence to impose revolutionary idealism on the rest of society, and an element of sheer cowardice. Unable to convince people in civilised terms of their jaded objectives, in frustration, they resort to murder, because only they are right (in their own minds) and the world is a basket case. 

Muslims and non-Muslims alike, in Canada and beyond, have rejected this evil act. There has been an outcrying of support from all corners of the world for those traumatise by this massacre. $127,000 was raised in just 21 hours, by Muslims and non-Muslims alike, to contribute to funeral costs for the deceased. In fact, when the Ottawa terror attack occurred, our own neighbours in Toronto, where our centre and mosque is locate, messaged us to offer support and to tell us we are welcome (in spite of the bigotry that was being spewed (by some) at the time towards Muslims at large), this was this was the level of concern they had for their Muslim neighbours and colleagues. 

Al-Islām is a religion that provides the utmost in peace and security to people and societies; a religion steeped in rights, balance, justice and respect. That evening, in an act of devotion that Muslims perform five times a day, those worshippers were turned towards their Creator in worship, standing, bowing and prostrating, beginning their prayers with the recitation of the following beautiful Verses from the Qur’ān:

بِسْمِ اللَّـهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّـهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful. All the praises and thanks be to Allaah, the Lord of the ‘Ālamīn (Mankind, Jinn-kind and all that exists).

The Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

The Only Owner (and the Only Ruling Judge) of the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection).

You (Alone) we worship, and you (Alone) we ask for help (for each and everything). 

Guide us to the Straight Way.

The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger, nor of those who went astray.

(Chapter: al-Fātiḥah)

Is this what they were hated for? Is this why they were killed? Is there a more beautiful devotion than that of complete submission to our Lord and Creator? Surely not. We remind Muslims in Canada, to follow the best of examples, that of our Prophet, Muḥammad, (ṣallAllaahu ʿalayhi wa ṣallam) who said: “I have only been sent to complete upright moral character” (ref: Muṣnad Aḥmad (2/381)). So exemplify just that, engage your Canadian colleagues and neighbours and teach them about al-Islām, teach that about the prayers that were being offered that night. Now, more than ever in this country, is a time for education and understanding. 

May Allaah raise the rank of his noble Messenger and grant us all safety and security.
