musical theatre roles that i personally believe should be genderbent to be a woman
in no particular order:
JD from heathers
professor callahan from legally blonde
emmett from legally blonde
dewey from school of rock
ned from school of rock
the baker from into the woods
orpheus from hadestown
billy flynn from chicago
mr tinsworthy from 9 to 5 (this one's niche as fuck but i strongly believe it)
beetlejuice from beetlejuice
ricky from ride the cyclone
the emcee from cabaret
eddie souther from sister act
seeing as legitimately nobody cares, here's my pitch for female professor callahan:
more roles for female altos (always good)
makes her a more complex villain - women can become the enforcers of patriarchy and stereotyping the same as men
creates a subtext of internalised misogyny at the heart of the story - it's a different idea to you know. externalised misogyny but i think it contrasts the theme of female solidarity in a way that makes the story more compelling to me
she becomes more of a foil to elle by way of showing a woman who has succeeded in law so much that she is feared by all her students but (in the way i would direct it) had to divorce herself from any physical femininity to do so and now resents that expression of femininity in Elle (and takes advantage of her because of it)
it could be possible to present her as a potential future for Vivian, who could grow more and more similar to her in terms of costume as the story progresses, and then return to her original style by the end. this would imply that Vivian idealises Callahan and increasingly pretends to be something she is not, making her "to thine own self be true" ending (which by the way is from hamlet which is another play i'm insane about!!!!!) even more resonant as elle has inspired her to do so herself
now, you may be asking, But Trog, doesn't this make the show more homophobic than it already is? (see: gay or European, Enid being not harmful just stereotypical) to which i would reply, well yes, yes it kind of does
BUT
here comes the second part
female emmett!!!!!
see i tricked you there's actually two queerifications in this post
pitch for female emmett:
again with roles for altos
makes the story really all about women in law
makes her "chip on [her] shoulder" and drive to succeed in an industry stacked against working class people even more compelling to the audience as she's a woman doing this in a male dominated industry
makes her arc falling in love with elle beyond her appearance and loving her in a more full way than warner did also take on the role of showing a positive WLW and positive WLW characters that contrast the surface level and performative hetero one
okay that's it
am i wrong for wanting more gender neutral words than person?
am i wrong for wanting an equivalent to 'boy' or 'girl' that i can use when reminiscing about when i was a little.... person?
a Little Person is its own identity and disability that i am not a part of. let me be something else.
am i wrong for not just wanting to be someone's partner? if i can't be a 'girlfriend' or a 'boyfriend' then i must be a ____friend? personfriend? don't be ridiculous.
and 'enby' doesnt cut it either, i'm not an 'enby' because i'm not nonbinary. i'm gender neutral in a different, less palatable way.
'NB' is a term used by the Black community to refer to non-Black people, so i do not want to speak over that original definition.
am i wrong for wanting to be something other than a fanperson? wanting to start something other than a personband?
is it problematic that i want something even slightly less cold and clinical? if i want to be acknowledged as more than just the complete bare minimum of being a person?
can i not be a part of the fun, silly, childish side of language too?
yes i know, i know 'person' is good, it's inclusive, it represents everyone, but -- am i selfish for wanting something just for us?
she would not date that fuckass man!!!!!!!
