new-to-me #695 - Sitting in Bars with Cake

Amazon's adaptation of author Audrey Shulman breezy young adult tearjearker novel about baking cakes, looking for love, and caring for your best cancer-stricken best friend mostly lives up to the source material. Yara Shahidi and Odessa A'zion star as said barhopping besties with enough charm. However, the film lacks a focus and the friend bond between the two leads isn't entirely clear despite their breezy on-screen chemistry. There's actually less sitting in bars with cake than you might expect.

You frequently feel awkward how predictable and by-the-numbers the plot of this rom-com is. But the very likable cast, good pacing and some funny dialogue makes it still worth watching when you need a break from the real-world news.
