#tripstr

this weekend i decided to neglect sleep and compete in miami music hackday with some friends, where teams have 24 hours to develop a product that relates to music. this specific event’s requirement was that product should relate to music API’s, since a big part of the sponsorship came from choose digital.

we ended up developing an iOS app in called tripstr (it’s available to check out on github!), and the idea is that it would be used to create and play back playlists generated based on where the user is currently located, or on an area that wish to go. the app uses the echonest api to search for popular artists in a a specific location and then the user can select specifically which of those artists they like, or specific genres that they like that are popular in that area and the app creates a continuous playlist based on the information. the app also handles all playback functions since it takes advantage of the spotify api as well (i mean technically by saying it uses echonest we were already using spotify ;D). the user logs into spotify with their premium account information in the app, and the app then functions as a music player.

in the end, it’s fairly simple. the user logs in the app with their spotify or facebook credentials, specifies where they are going or the app can grab their current location, popular artists and genres in that area are displayed, the user selects what they’d like to hear, and then the user would not have to interact with the app again since it would continue to create a music playlist and play it back based on the user input. this would be ideal for situations like roadtrips, hence the app name tripstr.
