I read this manga back in 2023. I have reread it almost 10 times since then, and even after all this time, I haven’t stopped thinking about this scene.
During my 4th-5th reread, I noticed something: Wolfwood only takes two vials AFTER Vash shows up. Until then, he only has it in his mouth. Why?
It’s only AFTER he knows Vash is there that he bites through and gulps down the medicine. I keep wondering, why did he wait until Vash was there? And then I had this thought…
Wolfwood sees Vash as a divine being, almost a stand-in for God. He’s also notably been afraid of death for this entire series… But Vash has always been there to fall back upon when he’s facing death, and now it seems he’s willingly chosen to face the Reaper head-on. But he only chooses this AFTER he’s certain Vash is there to back him up.
When Vash is with him, he has nothing to fear.

i'm fascinated by legato and wolfwood as foils. how they are both children who were abused and stripped of autonomy who then grew up to be violent men. how each can't see himself as anything close to human, only as tool or a weapon. how they both find themselves playing second to one of the twins, becoming a follower out of choice or circumstance, wolfwood finding confirmation of God's love through vash and legato finding a god to worship in knives. but what's most interesting to me is how they're both futilely trying to earn a love that is impossible to earn.
wolfwood wants so desperately to be a good man, he tries and tries but he can't do anything to wash the blood off his hands. then vash comes along and says hey. you're a good man even if you don't think you are, and even when you aren't i love you anyway. you don't have to earn my love or anyone else's, because that's what it means to love. you can't earn something freely and unconditionally given.
and legato knows he is nothing to knives but he can't help but cling to the delusion that if he's good enough, if he can just be useful enough or obedient enough, knives will love him back. maybe someday if he's just good enough he could be knives' favorite. maybe if vash wasn't in the way knives could love him instead. but it's futile because the same way vash's love is unconditional, knives' hatred is unconditional. legato is a human being, so he is categorically something that knives hates. he could never earn knives' love because you can't earn something that was unconditionally never going to be yours.
