Melasma is a hyperpigmentation, brown patches, of the skin and its causes are not well understood. Your body produces an excess amount of melanin, the pigment part of your skin. Tri-luma Cream contains 0.4% hydroquinone, 0.05% tretinoin, and 0.01% fluocinolone acetonide. Hydroquinone 4% is currently the most commonly used treatment for lightening the skin in patients with melasma. It inhibits the production of melanin. It has been used for more than 30 years and is considered the gold standard.

Improvement in melasma can usually be seen after eight to 12 weeks. Tretinoin is topical retinoic acid (Retin-A) and can also be used to treat melasma but may take six months or more of treatment and is usually combined with other treatment to accelerate the lightening. Tretinoin stimulates the renewal of healthy skin cells repairing damage to deeper layers of the skin.

Fluocinolone acetonide is a low-potency corticosteroid that helps to reduce irritation and inflammation.
