The #TreeofKnowldege historic marker can be found at a crossroads in the #Tarklin area of Duxbury. . From the late 17th Century on, the #postalroute from #Boston to Plymouth diverged at this corner and many riders eager to reach their destination, and not wanting to make to 2 mile detour into Duxbury would leave postage nailed to an old oak tree at this spot. Over time the tree would earn the nickname the “Tree of Knowledge” as this is where Duxbury residents would receive news from the outside world. According to legend a great storm passed through one night and lightning struck the great oak with such force it shook the whole neighborhood. . Following the destruction of the oak, an elderly resident of the neighborhood received a prophetic dream that the spot of the oak must always be marked- lest the town be cursed. Generation after generation held fast to this tradition keeping some kind of signage at the crossroads and in 1937 this concrete #historicmarker was laid.
