Porcupine damage on tree at the end of winter.
My first thought was rabbits based on the first glance on the low and narrow belt, but walking closer and seeing the big area in the back with the distinctive teeth marks it was clear the offender was a porcupine.
They are omnivores, mainly eating plants and at the end of winter, when food is scarce they love to eat bark.
