This costume was designed by Travis Banton for the 1935 Paramount film 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒔. The gown was created for Katharine DeMille in the role of Alice of France. DeMille, the daughter of director Cecil B. DeMille, pursued an acting career largely independent of her father and often declined roles he offered her, preferring not to have his reputation influence her work. Reportedly, her role in 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒔 was given to her as a Christmas gift.   The gown was worn again in 1956 by Mildred Natwick in her memorable role of Griselda in the film 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒕 𝑱𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓.   The costume consists of a two-piece period gown with a long cape, constructed of black silk crepe and richly embroidered with gold and silver bullion in an elaborate floral motif. Additional embellishments include glass pearls and steel marcasite beads. This stunning black and white costume was first worn by Claudette Colbert for the role of Cleopatra in the 1934 film 𝑪𝒍𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒂𝒕𝒓𝒂.   The costume was also seen modeled in a Paramount Promotional video for Travis Banton Designs, though the year and the model are unknown.   Want to see more costumes designed by Travis Banton? This distinctive suit, designed by Travis Banton, was first worn by Claudette Colbert as Jeannette Desmereau in the 1935 film 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝑯𝒐𝒎𝒆. This elegant gown, masterfully crafted by the renowned designer Travis Banton, made its dazzling debut on Kay Francis, who portrayed Donna Lucia d’Alvadorez in the 1941 adaptation of Brandon Thomas’ beloved play 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒍𝒆𝒚’𝒔 𝑨𝒖𝒏𝒕.   Although the audience saw it in black and white, its true color was revealed the following year when it graced Rita Hayworth as Sally Elliott in the 1942 film 𝑴𝒚 𝑮𝒂𝒍 𝑺𝒂𝒍.   Learn more about this beautiful dress at: Bit.ly/VicEd323    

This floral dress, with its distinctive scalloped edging on the sleeves, was designed by Travis Banton and first appeared in the 1930 Paramount film 𝑯𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒚, worn by Nancy Carroll in the role of Olivia Dangerfield.   Later that same year, the dress surfaced again in 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑬𝒚𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅, where Una Merkel wore what appears to be the same design as Sybil LaGrange. While the film is now considered lost, an illustration of Merkel on the cover of a reprint of the original novel suggests she was indeed wearing the same costume.   Whether it’s the exact same dress is unknown. Of the 43 films in TCM's Star Of The Month lineup for October, the one film that is noticably absent and continues to remain elusive to me is 'Lover Come Back' (1946). Lucille loved the Travis Banton designs so much that she was permitted to purchase the estimated $75,000 wardrobe for a sizeable discount. My visit to Paramount yesterday was a benefit for the @hollywood_heritage museum and we watched a screening of 1929's LOVE PARADE. They had #JeanetteMacDonald's original wedding gown (and crown) designed by #TravisBanton on display, which included its incredible train. Look through these pics to see all the detail.
