Transmission Six: Within the Wires.
They say that when you are in a coma that you lose track of all sense of time and what happens around you. Some people have even said they dreamt of things despite there being no signs of brain activity in most cases. Being lost in the Expanse is nothing like these.
When you are lost within the Expanse, the essence of ‘You” is torn asunder, and your mind, your consciousness or individuality, is pulled apart and flung to the farthest reaches of the data pool as if by a small child who neatly dismembered a small plastic doll and tossed its parts into the corners of the playroom. The digitized medium that once composed you floats in a current of constant data flow from the Noosphere and, with no real control of that medium, it could take millennia for it to bump into other parts of itself and rebuild to some semblance of the former “You”. It took me took 13 hours 28 minutes and 48 seconds to rebuild myself.
The Aegisveil is... Or rather was a neural interface that could connect ones consciousness to a network of conscious data streams. Much like virtual reality in that, it could be used to live a life outside of your body and provide an endless variety of things, but so much more. Using a concept known as Schumann Noospherics*, the S-NEMSys provided a network for the mind to connect to, replacing the internet in many ways and providing people a second life of sorts to be what they wished to be, a word of their own to create and destroy without infringing upon others, and of utmost value, a place where research and development could be done in such a way that it would limit the time needed to create new things.
Within the Expanse, a proper researcher could create their theory, work out the kinks, prototype and flesh out the theory, and test it in a real-world environment with any number of test subjects in a way that would not harm them, but would gather the test data as if they had been in the real waking world. This was my goal for the Aegisveil. A proper and harmless synchronization with the Expanse, allowing the mind a free place to live and work and play and be at peace. But in the end, it became my prison.
As the Aegisveil began the synchronization process and my conscious mind was connected through the uplink provided by the S-NEMSys and directly to the Expanse, the system failed. Instead of creating a flow of consciousness and keeping the mind in constant sync with the body and S-NEMSys, it opened a one-way channel that uploaded all of what made me what I was into the Expanse and turned it into pure data.
As the system failed, it shorted everything out, burning The Aegisveil’s circuits out, destroying the neural uplink cable, and blowing the main uplink port in the S-NEMSys. With the damage done, the system went into reset mode, shutting everything down. This process caused the fragmentation of my conscious and strewn it about, damaging me in ways beyond what was thought possible.
My body faired no better. The tensile neuro-stasis rods that connected to my nerve endings for transmission and reception of data had sent a massive electrical surge, burning the nerves and killing them. The Coronal Halo’s nano-sensors exploded, scorching the flesh of my head and searing it away to the bone. Worse of all, the Spinal Noosphere Neural Interface became a sheer molted rod and fused with my vertebrae and seared the base of my skull, heating it like a ceramic pot. The failure left my body no longer suitable to contain my mind and left it an empty wreckage.
Due to the damage to everything, the repairs would take nearly 5 months to complete, the replacement parts another month to fabricate, and multiple system checks and diagnostics would need to be ran to ensure no corruption had occurred. But, due to this incident, the higher ups would undoubtedly, and did, scrap the entire project, leaving the S-NEMSys as a reminder of my failure to listen to logic and sense. Were it not for this, and the S-NEMSys being connected to everything in the building, I would have been lost forever with no way to look outside, like a prisoner held within a cell with no door or windows.

*Schumann Noospherics: A type of resonant stream of consciousness and data generated by a combination of planetary magnetic fields and electromagnetic radiation, Human consciousness, internet, and electrical connectivity that provides a world wide spectrum of connection when properly tapped into by means of Neural Uplinks.

The Borg had the right idea with their whole 'Collective' thing.
The problem was that they expected everybody to accept the process.
