Ruler Rebel is the first actual trap jazz work I’ve ever heard. I mean it’s something that actually infuses both the language of trap rap and jazz into it’s music as opposed to having a trap beat and some rudimentary sax or trumpet playing a loop over it. It’s impressive because it’s one of the very few jazz rap albums (jazz first, rap second) that manages to maintain a jazz foundation while successfully incorporating hip hop ideas. Instead of just being some beats with some nice solos and stellar playing. That’s not a knock on that style which I’m a huge fan of and want to hear more. It’s just new exploration is always more exciting to me and Christian Scott really creates a lot of great space in the music instead of cycling down into hardcore jazz where everything is going on at once and can feel overwhelming for people not already immersed into that type of sound.
