linguistic things lost in translation-- Odajima switched to calling Kataoka 兄貴 here - aniki - instead of Kataoka-san.

aniki, literally translated, means older brother, and is used in families between siblings, but is also used in the Yakuza to show respect to someone who is above you in the organization. sometimes it gets translated as boss, sometimes i've seen it translated as "bro", but there's more layers to it, obviously. it's also considered ruder and more slangy most of the time, where the main way most people would refer to a familial older brother would be 兄さん, or お兄さん (nii-san, onii-san) or even お兄ちゃん (onii-chan). those can all be used for unrelated older males as well, but without the slang connotations of boss or bro bring present.

Odajima switching from calling Kataoka by name, even formally, to calling him aniki is an interesting shift. is it just because of the panic? is it because of the changes happening in their relationship? is it those two things combined? i am intrigued.
