trans katara is something that can be so personal 💞💗
i am thinking about nonbinary aang and mai, the he/they & she/they solidarity... mai who knows she’s not a girl, not quite, but they don’t know what else they could be because she’s not a boy either, and one day they’re talking to aang and the subject comes up and aang casually mentions that they’re not a boy—well, he’s boy-adjacent, but not all the way there—and mai just stares at him like.... you can do that? and aang tells them all about air nomad perceptions of gender and how he feels about his own gender, and mai is like... that’s me, you just described me but backwards? and aang is so happy for her

sokka transgender :)
thinking about zuko & katara’s friendship/siblinghood in the context of them both being trans and it’s really good because katara is very much at ease with her transness (especially at the point where zuko joins the gaang), like she loves being trans and she’s proud of it and of herself, and zuko... is not at that point yet. he grew up in a very different environment from katara, one that taught him to see being trans as a ‘defect’, another thing that made him not good enough in the eyes of his father, and his honor is very much tied up in his ideas of masculinity and the need to prove himself as a man. iroh definitely supported him (and helped him transition during his years in exile), but there was only so much growing zuko could do when he was still wrapped up in the mindset he learned from the fire nation.
but then he befriends katara, and she’s so open and comfortable about being trans, and she treats him being trans as something that’s not only normal but good. she’s really excited when he comes out to the gaang, and she gives him a big hug, and he’s completely bewildered but he hugs her back (it turns into a group hug almost immediately). he tells her about his feelings, and she talks about how she learned to balance the gendered expectations she had for herself with the reality of who she was, and how instrumental her friendships with suki and toph were in developing that for herself.
over time it becomes easier and easier for zuko to talk about it, as he comes to the realization that he doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone when it comes to his gender. he works to let go of his entrenched ideas of what being a man means and explores his own gender and finds what he enjoys, and it starts becoming a source of joy and pride for him too—zuko loves being trans because it’s part of who he is, and he credits his understanding of that in no small part to his sister.
