"You have to tell them at some point."
Steve sighed. She knew she had to come out eventually, but she was nervous. Hailey was right, though. How long would she be miserable for if she didn't come out now?
"You know what, you're right! I'll come out at dinner tonight!" Steve stood up from her position on Hailey's bed. "O-only if you will be there to support me, th-that is..." Her confidence faltered.
Hailey put her hand on her sister's shoulder. "Of course I'll be there for you, Stephanie"
Steve was glad she had come out to Hailey first. After the rollar derby incident, she realized she was a girl, Roger and Hailey were, of course, the first to know, but she hadn't told anyone else - well - besides her derby team, who had accepted her with open arms.
She was nervous. She didn't know how Francine would react, but she was pretty sure she knew how Stan would.
"Kids, dinner!" Francine yelled from downstairs.
Steve took a shakey breath as Hailey squeezed her shoulder. "You're gonna be fine. I know that, even if they don't accept you now, they will eventually. And they will never stop loving you."
Steve smiled, looking down at her feet. "Thanks Hailes."
Hailey ruffled her hair and led the way downstairs.
Steve sat at the dinner table, tapping her leg at 50mph.
She looked over to Hailey who gave her a reassuring smile and a thumbs up.
She sighed.
"Mom, dad, there's something I have to tell you."
Francine and Stan looked up from their plates.
"What is it, Steve?" Francine sounded worried.
"I... I want to be called Stephanie and be referred to as your daughter from now on." Steve- no! Stephanie held her breath as she waited for her parents' reactions.
Both parents let out noisy breaths.
"Jeez Stephanie, you scared us!" Francine said, relieved.
"Yeah, I thought something bad had happened with your friend group or something." Stan added.
"So... You're both okay with it?" Stephanie asked, still holding her breath.
"Yeah." Stan said.
"Totally!" Francine said at the same time.
Stephanie let out her own breath.
"Oh thank god."
"See," Hailey started, "I knew they would accept you!"
"Congratulations! Now all you have to do is come out to the school, and your doctors, and your friends, and any partners you may have, and-" Stephanie rammed her head on the table as Roger continued rambling on and on.
