When you used to be able to walk into bars, people often asked “what is the coolest part of my job?” The answer is pretty easy for me. It has always been getting the opportunity to used science-based training technology to help with the conservation of endangered species. You may be wondering what training is going on here? This little girl is supposed to spend the day in the forest learning skills to survive in the wild. But she often ditches school and heads back home early. Going home (especially at the end of the day results in lots of food and enrichment.) Our goal was to teach a behavior that is fairly familiar to most but just in a different context. Essentially it is a “stay” behavior for long duration. However for her the criteria is that she has a huge forest as her so called station. We wanted to start having more of her desired items delivered in the forest, and we also wanted them more removed from humans. We made natural looking packets of different fave foods wrapped in leaves. At first we allowed her to see us tucking them into trees. Then we started hiding them in the forest. The goal was to teach her there is value to stay and keep searching the forest as you never know when something amazing may be discovered out here. We also plan to time a few extra surprises in the forest for the times of day she is more likely to return.
