When you used to be able to walk into bars, people often asked “what is the coolest part of my job?” The answer is pretty easy for me. It has always been getting the opportunity to used science-based training technology to help with the conservation of endangered species. Between travels to Borneo and time to recover from jet lag it’s been a minute. I’m overdue for some sharing 😊 As I look at this clip of the infamous Beni (he is the big guy), Kalanis and Oka (spinning girl up front) I think about many lessons. Let’s focus on one…appropriate play. Beni and Kalanis are both males and engaging in some rough play. This likely serves a purpose in their development and social behavior as they mature. However, that type of interaction is definitely something we would prefer is kept between orangutans and hopefully is not something they engage in with their surrogate mothers/caregivers. It is super tempting when animals are young to “rough house” with them. It is fun for them and us! But they quickly learn this is fun way to interact with us more often than not. The problem is this type of play often escalates to aggressive behavior. And as animals grow and mature it gets harder to manage. It’s not the animal’s fault that a reinforcement history has taught them this is a really fun way to interact with people. I often see this happen with other species being raised to be animal ambassadors. Needless to say, those animals end up being very challenging or difficult to get back on track. What is the solution? Teach animals that calm interactions with people earn desired consequences. Even when animals are super young and little. Let rough play happen with other animals. If that is not possible, use a toy or other object as an extension of your body for more active play. Try to avoid using your hands or body to directly instigate play. This way the animal can make a discrimination and orient play towards the object and not you. Sound familiar? You may have tried this with a biting puppy or kitten. Oka is a smart girl to play with her coconut and let the boys be boys with each other. If you are watching Orangutan Jungle School, you will have seen an episode about this little lady…Luthy! She was learning to ditch school early. And for good reason. She entered school at 2 years old so didn’t have quite the bond with her classmates and was getting bullied. She also learned if she headed back to base camp she could score goodies from the food bins of the residents waiting for release. Orphaned Noni had a hard time learning to be independent. In our work with the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation, one of the things we practiced was teaching young orangutans to allow their caregivers to leave and to also go explore the forest on their own.
