A model of a hobo camp set up at @pacificsouthwestrailwaymuseum . . . These vagabonds used to stow away in train cars, moving from town to town, in search temporary work, food and shelter. . . . They developed a system of symbols to communicate with one another about conditions that might be encountered from stop to stop. . . . While they may not have been the first hobos, there was a spike in this population following the Civil War.
