“You know what would be fun to do on Halloween since we’re too old to go trick-or-treating,” Anita asked, not at all bothered to hear anyone ask ‘what’ in response to her question before moving on to answer herself. “I think it would be super fun to download the horror movie rules and have a horror movie marathon -- every time someone breaks a rule, we take a shot.”

And what had been left unsaid was that Anita hadn’t been lucky enough, in her youth, to watch horror movies like other kids her age. She had been teaching herself to read and to write more than her own name in her pre-teens thanks to her biological family and their allegiance to an ass backwards “community”.

anna entered her dorm room, closing the door shut behind her for a moment of reprieve. heart fluttering, it was almost as if it hadn’t stopped all week. everything exciting, everything new-- being out of the house and on her own was opening doors that’d never been open before.

and her poor, new roommate had a front row seat to watch her ride through freshman year.
