I had a girl who for religious reasons didn't want to say it so the teacher just asked that she would stand with the rest of us at least.
See that still makes me feel uncomfortable. You’re still, to a far lesser degree, pressured into participation.
You know, now that I think about it; growing up, in primary school we had to sing Christian hymns during school assembly. I know you had the option to opt out, probably with your parent’s permission, but it was strongly discouraged. And kids would always talk about the other kids who didn’t have to do it. And we weren’t allowed to be in the room but not sing. If you were in, you had to sing (unless like me you happened to be a convincing enough mime). This was what, 7 years of school? But then after that, it all stopped. But still it doesn’t seem to compare to this.
So I’m also assuming it’s similar in that people who refuse probably also get judged quite a bit from classmates as well as teachers?
