Every young girl has a celebrity heartthrob growing up, somebody they look up to, hang posters of above their bed, and beg their parents to see live. In 2007, pop-punk rock music was at its peak and it seems as though every other girl was raving about either Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz or Panic! at the Disco’s Brendon Urie. If you aren't aware of who Brendon Urie is, you might either be too young, too old, or were too busy listening to Nickelback or Eminem at the time. Although, Brendon Urie is the lead singer of the band Panic! At the Disco who was greatly known for their unique alternative rock sound. Their debut album was “ A Fever You Can't Sweat Out (2004) the album was not very popular at first, although grew in sales as the years went by. In the years 2005-2009 the pop-punk genre was thriving with bands like Weezer, Falloutboy, Green Day, and Panic! at the Disco at the top of the Rock charts.
Panic! At the disco formed in 2004 and they are still a group today, although they are very different today than in previous years. For starters Brendon Urie is the only remaining original member of the group, he has been accompanied by a whole new band. Panic!’s sound has significantly changed since their debut albums, and Panic! at the disco, a band formerly known as rock or pop-punk, can today be categorized as a mainstream pop band. This leaves the question, “Has Brendon Urie sold out.” The term “selling out” according to urban dictionary means,“ anyone who sacrifices artistic integrity in an effort to become more successful or popular, someone who forgets their roots.”
Unfortunately, Panic!’s first split was in 2009 which led them to take a few years off with the absence of their bassist and guitarist, although they began producing records again shortly after.

Recently Brendon Urie and pop icon Taylor Swift have collaborated and released a song together named “ME!” A very fruity song and definitely something I would not imagine Brendon originally being apart of. Panic! Has also recently released an album called ‘Pray for the Wicked” which features many mainstream pop songs like “Hey Look Ma, I Made It” and “High Hopes.”Clearly these songs have been very popular, and are currently charting hits. Although I feel as though with two very popular artists like Taylor Swift and Brendon on a track, it is bound to be popular either way. Brendon has spoken multiple times about the influence of Queen, Frank Sinatra, and musicians like David Bowie on Panic! At the Disco’s music. He told ABC News Radio, “Roger Taylor and Freddy Mercury’s combination of vocals on Bohemian Rhapsody, I wanted to mimic that in a new way, like how I would do it.” Although hearing of these artists Brendon was inspired by and hearing the content he is producing today has me questioning if he has changed the sound of Panic! in order to acquire to the taste of the mainstream market today.
Albums like “A Fever You Can't Sweat out” and “Pretty. Odd” both feature many rock elements which the new tracks are lacking. These new releases also feature a lot of repetition in their lyrics.
We have seen this multiple times in the music industry due to the fact that popular music styles change and with time music evolves. Although music evolving is a positive thing, it is still upsetting to see your favorite artists change genres in order to suit the taste of others. We have seen this in pop culture with bands like Maroon 5 and Fall Out Boy. I would love to see Panic! At the disco go back to their old roots in upcoming albums and show that they have not lost that spark of rock in their music. Nonetheless, the band is still very talented, and very successful on charts today and I am excited to see what their next step in music will be.

Today we have an amazing project brought to you from the band known as TheJUST. The gospel group from New Orleans with a mission in mind: To spread the good news of Christ through their music and inspire. With their very cohesive 13 track project they bring a different flavor to the gospel genre blending styles of neo soul into their work which works excellently.
Diving into the intro track it starts with what seems like one of the band members asking a gentleman who Jesus is to him. The man seems unsure of who he is exactly but works up the words to describe his vision of Jesus. The tracks “Seek and Save” and “Life” are excellent starts to the project, showcasing the strong vocal harmonies the group is capable of as well as the perfectly blended neo-soul production that I’ve mentioned earlier. In “Seek and Save” the message is clear; helping those that were lost find their way back to Jesus. Its an uplifting message as they sing “To seek, to save / those that are lost, in their way”. “Life” has an interesting story with the song as a father tries to bring his son back to light. Once again excellent production is heard throughout the track with the guitar having a mind of its own towards the end as the chorus is sung in a loop. Most the tracks have similar messages and stories behind them.
Going down a bit down further into the project “PoG” switches things up a bit and bringing an upbeat, funky and familiar old school gospel track into the foray. You hear the chant “The power of God” throughout the most of the track, it's an OK track with smooth vocals. “Changed My Mind” speaks about a once troubled individual who managed to change their life around once they found Christ. Getting down to track 9 titled “O Ye” is a personal favorite that starts off with horns and a nice bassline to set the mood. It speaks about faith wavering and thinking that one is not able to carry on.
At the end of the project the Outro track starts off a little like the Intro. The same questions are asked but this time the gentlemen seems a little more sure of his faith and they go into more depth of what the Christ is. The overall project here is very well put together, there are very few weak moments on the album which shows the strength of this band and what they’ve accomplished here. Be sure to look for The just and more of their awesome work.
When Grandson’s newest song, War, begins, it literally moves you. The Toronto native blends grunge and rock with trap and a myriad of other sounds to make music that speaks long after the song ends. ‘War’ opens with heavy electric guitar and drums, and then Grandson begins to sing. Before the lyrics even begin, the instrumentation itself is a call to action- which is quite timely, considering the political climate. Grandson is no stranger to addressing real topics in his music- singing about racism within the first lines of the song. The chorus itself is relevant to the United States and North Korea’s relationship and nuclear weapons, and could possibly be a reference to the events in Charlottesville. “And its war in the east/War in the west/war up north, war down south… everywhere is war,” Grandson sings. The song then launches into a blisteringly-good instrumental break filed with trap drums, guitar riffs, and vocal sampling so jam-packed it’s almost like musical fireworks. Grandson, like many new artist like Lil Peep, are blending rock and rap, but Grandson has a different approach, using a more cohesive blend of heavy power chords and riffs blended with more subtle traces of trap rather than the mix being overt. In addition, his lyrics are more socially conscious and more passionate. ‘War’ is in-your-face rock ‘n’ roll that is pretty reminiscent of the unabashed attitudes of punk, and it is needed in this time- not just sonically but culturally as well.
