Okay, so MK8D DLC dropped a few hours ago and I just got through playing it. In short: the tracks are... Fine. Just fine. Nothing spectacular or anything.
But, here's one of my biggest pet peeve with the DLC: the new tracks just seem... Out of place. I don't know how to explain it, so let me show you.
Here are two tracks that are apart of MK8 (Wii U) by default:
And another two that were apart of the MK8 (Wii U) DLC:
Comparing the two sets, you can see that, even though the second set of tracks are DLC, they still blend in with the rest of the game. They don't seem out of place because they follow the same style of MK8.
Even the tracks from completely different franchises blend in with the style of MK8:
But the ones in the MK8D DLC? They all look something like these:
They all have this clay-like, made-in-Unity look, feel, and vibe to them. If you compare all these images side by side, the last two stand out because they don't follow the same style of MK8/MK8D, and that's a bit VERY bothersome to me.
It looks kinda like they just took the same tracks from Mario Kart Tour, upscaled them a bit, hacksawed them into MK8D and called it a day. Which, honestly, is probably what they did. They didn't even bother trying to match the style of MK8D.
To make matters worse, some of these SAME tracks have been apart of MK Tour, a game that you can play FOR FREE on your phone, and yet they're reselling them as """DLC""" for MK8D. Like...? Does that rub anyone else the wrong way? Like really, it wouldn't be a problem had these tracks been actually remade, optimized, and designed FOR MK8D, but no, these are literally the same exact models used in MK Tour. The custom tracks that fans modded into MK8D look better than these. They could've at least took the time to make them blend in — at least a little bit — like they did for the Wii U DLC.
I don't know. Maybe I'm being nitpicky. Anyways.
So, first impressions? DLC tracks are fun, but not impressive in the slightest. Hopefully the upcoming wave of content will be better.
TL;DR: new MK8D DLC tracks looks like ripped Unity models instead of actual MK8D courses and I'm not very happy about it.
