This is the story of the one and only TPK I have been totally responsible for...
So, back in college, a friend of mine was starting up a game. Of course, this being the days when TF2 was huge, everyone in the group talked it over and we all decided to play characters based on TF2. Shuddup, we were dumb. We had a soldier, a heavy, a spy, a scout, and me, the medic.
Slightly relevant to this, but I'd just bought new dice, and got a lovely pink cthulu set that I was excited to use.
The story begins and we quickly get into our first fight. First turn goes down and the soldier gets hit pretty hard. My turn rolls around and I go to heal them. Because it happened to be a low magic setting, I have to heal using a medicine check. No fancy spells here, just good old doctoring.
DM asks me to confirm the roll, as I have now hurt our fighter.
DM, now laughing, informs me I have killed the soldier. She asks me to confirm, as some people start googling.
The player next to me, shows the table of critical failures. I have now killed my own character. I also have to keep rolling to confirm.
I take my pretty new cthulu dice in hand, and I fucking roll that bad boy, a tear in my eye.
The whole room is now transfixed on my cursed fucking die. This thing is sucking in the light around it. The room is noticeably darker. I let it plop from my trembling hands.
A one stares back at me. I swear the tentacle pattern on the dice fucking twitches.
I don't know what the table my friend found says about rolling five critical failures in a row. It's been 10 years. I do remember the DM picked up my haunted die, and rolled it to watch it plink out a lovely little 14.
I remember taking that die. Walking out into the night and throwing it as hard as I could out into the dark from whence it came.
I remember laughing about it later as we all went to get taco bell.
And that is how I killed the entire team.
I shit you not, one of my other friends brought a pink cthulu die to a game 5 years later. He did infact find it one day while walking around near where I threw the cursed hell die. I believe he still has it. Treats him well.
