Thorens TP16 tonearm bouncing problem Hey Dave! Are you out there?
Months ago a guy named Dave Denison of Raytheon Company, based in Germany, wrote to me about a problem with his Thorens tonearm:
“Hello, I have a TD-145 and when lifting the tone arm it bounces up and lowers fast. I have tried all kinds of dampening but nothing seems to work. Could it be the tone arm itself?”
I tried to reply several times but I only obtained a server error. I was really sorry being unable to try and help. Then I thought he may be a reader of this blog.
Hopefully he will be able to read this post:
“Hi Dave. It sounds like your tonearm is not balanced well. What kind of dampening did you try? Is the tonearm a stock TP-16? Or, I'm thinking, is it possible the L-shaped cue bar hits the tonearm strongly from below when you activate the lift mechanisms? Maybe the bar rises too fast and the tonearm bounces back down with force? Also, is your cartridge VTF correct? If it is too low it would explain that behavior. Then I could tell you how to adjust it correctly.
Sorry, I may be asking obvious questions but I want to make sure I understand everything and have the most accurate picture of what's going on...
Again, it might be useful if you could send me some pictures of the tonearm and the cue bar when it is up or down while playing.
Let me know”
