Expressed as a percentage, 53.4 percent of kickoffs were returned this season, a huge drop from 80.1 percent in 2010.
In a related note, touchbacks skyrocketed to 43.5 percent this season, more than two and a half times last year’s rate of 16.4 percent.
I was pretty close. My analysis of the new rule, based on last year's kickoffs, suggested just under 40 percent touchbacks. The difference is small but perhaps meaningful. While returners brought back more deep kicks, kickers may have used the shorter field try for distance over hangtime.

In the first round of exhibition games this year, 31.9 percent of kickoffs resulted in touchbacks. That's up from 18.5 percent in the opening week of the preseason last year and 17 percent during the 2010 regular season, once onside kicks and kicks at the end of halves are discounted.
Kickoffs back to the 35; touchbacks remain at the 20; coverage team running starts can only be 5 yards
Bradley here, and I actually like this rule change. I think it'll increase player safety, and I also believe that, while it may hurt kickoff returners some in that there will be more touchbacks, the less-publicized limits to running starts for coverage teams will neutralize this some.
Plus, kickoffs from the 35 were good enough for us from 1974-1994.
