When your parents say that they support whatever gender you identify as, as long as...
You don’t change what you look or sound like (”When you lower your voice, you just sound angry”)
You don’t change how you look (”I don’t like how you’ve been wearing looser clothing, you just look like a slob” “If you want to bind, you have to pack too”)
You don’t identify as gender-fluid or agender or gender-neutral, because those things apparently don’t really exist
Oh, so if I never land on “male” or ”female”, my gender just doesn’t exist
Thank mom, dad, for making this easier for me, just like all the people who are still calling me she/her/ma’am
Just like the girls who seem perfectly fine with changing to underwear in the school bathrooms (outside of the stalls) who don’t seem to understand that some people really don’t like that
Just like my therapist in middle school who said I was just weird
Just like my “friends” who don’t acknowledge that I’m not flat-out female
Just like so many other parents who don’t actually support their kid’s gender even though they say they do.
Thanks, parents.
