The girl called Fuu didn’t seem to be too concerned with the fact that there was blood on her bare feet. She stared down at the corpse that had, until recently, been Kirihito Sumeragi with a look that was part terror, part grief, and part wonder. Her hands clutched at opposite shoulders, and she rocked back and forth slightly in place, staring unblinking, and muttering under her breath.
Hadn’t she seen this? Hadn’t she told them? Evil. Evil, evil, evil. And now made manifest. Didn’t matter that she hadn’t liked the boy who was now dead. She should have said something. Done something. She had known this. She had seen this.
She pulled her eyes away from the corpse at last, blinked back tears stinging her eyes. Not tears for him, but for herself, and for all of them. Someone among them had done this, and she didn’t know who, and it made her feel awfully useless. It was like the stink of this place had deafened her. She couldn’t hear. And so she couldn’t speak. And it frightened her. Something had been cut away.
She left bloody footprints as she moved. What had the scarecrow said? Investigate. Yes... she could do that. If she couldn’t hear, maybe she could see. Do this the normal way. Make herself useful, somehow.
She walked a big circle and ended up back near the corpse’s head. Unclenching her hands, she lifted the hem of her dress to keep it from getting blood on it too, and then reached with one, delicate hand down to Kirihito’s face. She examined Kirihito’s neck and face for signs of bruising or injury. The file had said asphyxiation, after all.
She turned to look behind her. “Please watch your step,” she said, “It... is rather messy.” Said as if there wasn’t blood on her already.
