Many tortoises are much like human toddlers in that they explore their worlds with their mouths. A new substrate, plastic decorations, gravel and random bits of human garbage are perfect for a few exploratory bites. When odd eating choices become regular occurrences you have to consider the possibly of a medical condition called pica which is often associated with nutritional deficiencies in humans and animals. Avoid these worrying and potentially hazardous conditions by having a clean well maintained enclosure, a mentally and physically stimulating environment as well as a healthy widely varied diet.
