Recent Acquisition - Photograph Collection
Original October 1941 caption: “Clarendon, VA. Maps to Aid National Defense. A new plant, to produce maps for national defense from aerial photographs, has been outfitted by the topographic branch of the Geological Survey. This office, occupying 13,7000 square feet of space, was established to prepare, on an emergency schedule, maps from photographs provided by an intensified aerial survey program covering continental United States and Alaska.”
Teeny tiny little scientists would have worked at this model of NIH’s Building 1. Made from a wood block covered by paper with artistically hand-drawn windows and doors, this miniature came from a topological map of the NIH campus, c. 1950. Unfortunately, the topological map was mostly destroyed in a move several years ago, but some of the original buildings were saved for posterity.
