▪️Here is an extraordinary photograph dating back to 1898 – the oldest known image from the village of Topli Do. It features Kosta Mladenović (1835-1906) with his wife, Nedelja, and the family of their son Nikola. Standing proudly on the right is Dimitrije Mita Mladenović, Kosta’s grandson and a key figure in the family’s lasting legacy.

Who Were the Mladenović Family?

▪️The Mladenović family descends from Hajduk Mladen, a legendary freedom fighter who defended the Stara Planina region against Ottoman rule. Hajduk Mladen’s courage and determination left an indelible mark on the family and the region. Around 1800, he built the family's stone house in Topli Do, a symbol of their resilience and independence.

💡 Kosta Mladenović, continuing his ancestor's legacy, became a prominent figure in the development of Topli Do. He achieved entrepreneurial success by trading goats and leather products from Stara Planina with merchants in Thessaloniki, Alexandria, and Istanbul. Understanding the importance of education and progress, Kosta ensured his grandson Dimitrije’s education abroad and prepared him for a life of innovation and leadership.

🔔 In 1876, Kosta co-led a rebellion alongside priest Đorđe Ignjatović against Ottoman forces, demonstrating his commitment to freedom and justice. Later, he played a pivotal role in rebuilding the Church of Saint Paraskeva (1899–1903), a project that symbolized the revival and unity of the community after years of hardship.

Legacy and Recognition

▪️Kosta’s leadership extended beyond his village. In 1893, he was elected as a “težak” (representative of the working class) to the Serbian parliament, representing Topli Do among 136 delegates from across the nation. Despite his political achievements, Kosta remained devoted to improving livestock farming and the production of the renowned Pirot kačkavalj cheese, even enlisting Greek artisans to enhance its quality.

▪️Today, Kosta Mladenović rests in the yard of the Church of Saint Paraskeva, a testament to his enduring contributions to the community. His life and work brought prosperity, unity, and hope to the people of Topli Do.
