When the Paste Runs Out
When the Paste Runs Out
At some point in your continued routine of oral hygiene, you look down at your tube of toothpaste and notice it is nearly empty. You keep reminding yourself to get more, but that thought escapes your head as soon as you escape the bathroom. Then, there’s nothing left, and no equation in science or nature will get any more toothpaste out. No family members or neighbors to borrow from, no time to…

Brushing Without Toothpaste
You lumber into the bathroom to brush your teeth, wondering what you forgot while grocery shopping the night before. When you notice the tube of toothpaste rolled up to the cap, you remember what you forgot at the store. Desperately you try to push out whatever might be left, but not even a single bead of goo emerges.
You are now officially out of toothpaste. No other tubes in the cabinets, and…

Ever wonder how the people of the past do “tooth brushing” even before the tooth brush and tooth paste were invented? Surely, both tooth brush and tooth pastes were inexistent when the first civilization began, right?
History tells us that, unlike with the use of tooth brush and tooth paste as practiced to this day, people of the past use alternatives. They may even be referred to as the predecessor of both toothbrush and tooth paste themselves, at least in practice. As if turning us back in time, natural tooth pastes are being the rage these days due to the concern on today’s tooth paste. This specifically meant the chemical components of today’s tooth paste. Fluoride, titanium oxide, glycerin, and sodium lauryl sulfate are known to be potentially harmful components of today’s tooth pastes. In fact, knowing that tooth paste is dangerous when swallowed, as the label says so, is one proof of this fact.
Thus, the following are proven natural and good alternatives to tooth paste:
 Sea salt
Salt is a known anti-microbial. While you can just use salt with warm water for gargle, as commonly a practice on oral hygiene, it is not necessarily brushing. You can, however, just dab your tooth brush in salt water and brush as usual.
 Baking soda
Similarly used as sea salt does, baking soda can also be used as an alternative to tooth paste. But unlike sea salt, it is possible for anyone to make a paste out of baking soda. It only takes proper proportioning of baking soda and water.
 Hydrogen peroxide
Known to keep our teeth white and clean, hydrogen peroxide are now widely used as an alternative to toothpaste. However, it is only to those who still have natural teeth. This means that there must be no fillings in the teeth when brushing.
 Herbal tooth powders
More than just cleaning your teeth, herbal tooth powders can also be beneficial overall for the mouth by helping ease inflammation, pain, and infection.
 Coconut oil
Coconut oil is known to be healthful to our bodies. But who would have known that it can be used as an alternative to tooth pastes too? In fact, its anitfungal and antibacterial properties come very handy when used for mouth cleaning.
 Oral irrigation (waterpik)
This may not be a popular means of maintaining oral hygiene in some parts of the world due to accessiblity, maybe. For those who do, however, can actually use it as an alternative to brushing with a tooth brush and a tooth paste. For better effectivity, it is suggested that salt water be used in it instead of tap water.
