this is absolutely my favorite scene from 1917.

you see, scho is going with the flow and he feels so exhausted he could sleep in the water, and then he almost drowns.

he is fucking exhausted.

but then, he sees the cherry flowers falling down like it is snowing (just like blake said moments before dying) and he remembers his task of saving 1600 men and honoring his best friend's death. he can't stop now, he can't rest now, he can't waste tom's life like that. he has to complete his mission of writing to mrs. blake.

in the first pic, we see in his eyes how exhausted he is. in the second, we see how sad he is for remembering blake's death. he knows that he tried everything, but he didn't have the resources to keep tom alive. God knows he tried.

it's a war, you don't have resources at all.

and all of that, by not saying a word.
