Talyllyn Railway #7 “Tom Rolt”

Now that I've exhausted most of my Dolgoch media and my one and only video of Talyllyn, let's take a look at what else I saw during my day-long visit to to the railway.
The first engine I saw that day was the lovely Tom Rolt. She tends to fly under the radar, like most of the diesels, with the obvious exception of Midlander, but she's absolutely gorgeous. It's the only one out of all the Talyllyn Railway steam locomotives that can make the round trip without filling up. They do so anyway, of course.
I also acquired Tom Rolt's book. It's a great read, probably one of the greatest books from the early preservation period. I can think of no other book quite like it. Do give it a read if you get the chance!

I would add Idris (who is a line press machine (at least that's what I think she is)) but Tumblr only allows 10 options and I'm pretty sure nobody outside of select Talyllyn members know that they named a line press machine "Idris". The Talyllyn Railway names practically everything by the way, we're slightly mad (I say that as a life member of the railway).
BTW when this poll ends I will be in Wales, probably pestering some Talyllyn members who are close in age to me or being asked to take photos of some random tourists or running around Nant Gwernol with a child who pestered me while on the ride up in the coaches (like last year).

SO to anyone who was wondering why I’ve been gone for a while, I’ve been working really hard and saved up enough to go on vacation to Tywyn in Wales to visit a certain little railway :)

Tom Rolt was definitely an interesting person, though I must say, this small passage of his writings is genuinely quite inspiring to me. Quite a poetic description for a pottery oven of all things.
The fact that he was against a lot of the mechanised and industrial aspects of what the world was becoming at the time is also a rather interesting aspect of his character.
Especially as he is known quite widely for his contributions to preserving the kind of machines (steam engines) that were once one of the main players in the industrialisation and gradual urbanisation of Britain.

Quintessential reading if you want to learn the story of the world's first persevered railway and the many trials and tribulations faced by the people who saved the railway for our generation.
