“What happens when THUGS crash the whitest neighborhood in the city?”
This video's been going around, and it makes me so freaking uncomfortable. On the one hand, these guys are amazing singers, and it's pretty great to see someone's racist fears get turned on their heads. On the other hand, the impact of the video depends on those fears, and the fact that it's a white guy (the prankster Tom Mabe) using black performers seemingly for his own ends...Well, the question "Is it racist?" is never about intent, but about whether or not something reinforces the racist power structure. The sense that "Oh wait! these dangerous black guys aren't what they seem! They are an extraordinary exception!" seems to mean that usually, dangerous black guys *are* what they seem. Hopefully I'm overthinking, but ugh.
