Tom Calvert - Can’t Cook, Won’t Cook

I hate cooking. I am absolutely no good at it. I lack skill, finesse and culinary knowledge. I’m clumsy and make a mess. I can’t chop things finely and I call everything I make ‘rustic’. My girlfriend makes a strange face when I say ‘I’ll cook’, and we normally end up eating out. This project is about my relationship with food. Before I started this project I didn’t own an apple corer-peeler-slicer machine nor did I realise that kiwis made excellent fake eyes. Yet through the process of creating this work I now own that apple corer-peeler-slicer machine and I now fully appreciate the qualities of a kiwi. Some of the images I have made, play on the linguistic absurdities that can be found in the world of gastronomy whilst other images were created through the playfulness and exploration of my relationship with food. The intentions of these images are not to be sombre or serious but to highlight an enjoyment that can be found within both photography and food-an enjoyment that I have experienced myself whilst making this series.

Some readers may wish to follow the journey in its entirety or in parts. Others may feel satisfied by remaining within the comfort of an armchair and completing an imaginary journey over the peaks and along the ridges. Whichever method is adopted, it is hoped that the reader will absorb the history and scenic beauty of what is still a magical and treasured part of Britain.

Before I went on the journey, I had never climbed a mountain, nor had I owned an OS map or worn a pair of gaiters. After completing it, I still can’t read a map, my waterproof trousers remain unused and I own a compass that doesn’t point north.

What have I gained from following Tom Calvert over mountains, across lakes and down caves? Other than a sore back and a tanned face, it has provided me with a number of insights about myself. Can I survive extended periods of time without company? No, not really. Can I carry a heavy rucksack up a mountain? Just. Can I find humour, silliness and absurdity anywhere? Hopefully.

But perhaps the biggest question that remains is whether I have found myself?
