wip wednesday
i have been tagged in various wip wednesdays by various people and not posted anything but now i am going to use it to offload these Shivering Isles sketches i got bored with and decided not to finish
Left: Erver Devani and Tanis looking at swamp things. Right: a concept for Mirili Ulven which is almost how i pictured her as I wrote. no oblivion character looks like an actual person so i take the liberty to give them whatever face i want lol
tagging: @throughtrialbyfire @dirty-bosmer @sylvienerevarine @ehlnofay @jiubilant @da3drat @triflingshadows @nuwanders no pressure but if you're working on anything i would love to see it xx
Updated my fic to Chapter 7, featuring a journey through the swamps of Dementia.
If the ask game is open would like to hear about this bit! (The Nature of Fire, Chapter 9).
hell yeah I'll always babble 🖤🖤 link to ask game
The original story came from this in-game book which I chose to interpret as a myth rather than a literal accounting of events.
I like to cherrypick in this way because even though gods are Confirmed Real in TES that doesn't preclude mortal-created myths! My rationale behind this one was that the idea of music (and dance, and any art) as a behavior is very important to me....it isn't some divine gift or aspirational ideal, it's an innate and universal compulsion among the human animal.
Sheogorath is a little pithy and cryptic about the story because he knows the actual origins aren't really within Tanis's understanding of the world (hence the "the way you mortals dance around your fires" remark, hearkening back to ancient behavior).
I like to think that this myth came from Dunmer oral tradition for a couple reasons:
- Some of the very first instruments would in fact have been made of bone. A culture of ancestor veneration might have a tradition of using the bones of deceased relatives for ritual purposes....including musical instruments. I like the idea of one particular skull drum being passed down through generations, purported to belong to the young woman from the story.
- in the Velothi faith Sheogorath is one corner of the House of Troubles--dangerous gods but also providers of trials. So the gruesome fate of the woman in the story is a reflection of the Lord of Madness and Creativity's test for a dedicated musician. Music as self-evisceration, not in the "tortured artist" sense but in that it can either be an exposure of the deeply personal or, as a social activity, a form of self-annihilation/absorption into the Other.
wip wednesday, or as i like to call it, friday

A ⭐️ for Nature of Fire! :) Might send a more specific ask later when we’re not falling asleep lol -Mars
It's really easy to play through the whole Shivering Isles questline without encountering Erver Devani but idk he just captured me.
Initially, in chapter 7 i was going to write him going through a panic attack after leaving his house but I cut that--- the game makes such a spectacle of the NPCs that I decided I'd rather not. There is a lot that could be said about The Symptoms™ but it was another scenario where I felt I could say the most by saying as little as possible. I'm only about halfway through the story and I do have another scene planned for him so we'll see how well I execute it!
