I was not a big fan of this book. It seems to be the favorite of most people who read The Mortal Instruments, but I was just ready to be finished with it.
I think the major reason is because I dislike Sebastian. And I know he is the villain and the person I should dislike, but he isn’t a good villain to me, so I just get annoyed with him even being in the books and hated pretty much all scenes with Clary, Jace, and Sebastian in them. Um, I also was not there for that assault scene. That was so unnecessary. I can’t understand the need for it to be in the book. If it was to show how awful Sebastian was, that wasn’t needed. We already know how awful he is. So yeah, I am glad I am done with it and am so excited to get back to the Infernal Devices with Clockwork Princess.
We’re ready to get back to the world of The Mortal Instruments.
I was having a hard time sleeping, so I read until I got tired enough for bed. Not sure if I will get back into this today, but if not, at least my 30 minutes for the day has been completed.
Magnus Bane has been mentioned. I think Simon is about to become a vampire or might have already been bitten. So, Clary had a dream where Simon was there, but then Jace replaced him and said it was a place for the living. Does she have prophetic dreams? See, this is something new. I don’t think I picked up on that before. I can’t remember if Shadowhunters can have special abilities or not, but if they can, maybe hers is a premonition or something.
I know Magnus Bane is hugely popular in the TV series, so I wonder how much I will like him in the books. I remember him, but not very well. Seemed super cocky and all that jazz.
I haven’t seen the show, but I’ve seen spoilers about him and Alec being together. If he was the one that put the block in Clary’s memories, he is probably at least 40, but I am sure I remember him being young. So, warlocks are immortal? Like I said, I don’t remember the finer details. I don’t even know if they are together in the books.
And I am done. Last time I read it, I gave it three stars, but I bumped it up because it is rereadable. I remembered a lot from the book, I probably did not need to reread it to continue the series. However, the bit about Simon being a vampire, I pulled from the movie. I think it shows more signs or outright says it in the movie. There are tiny hints to it though in the book. We are told many times about him biting the vampires and then Isabelle makes a comment about how fast he was when he came in and helped “kill” the Abbadon. I think that was a little clue.
I think the reason I had a problem with the book before is because I thought the whole they are siblings story-line was stupid. I felt there would be some kind of love-triangle and all that jazz moving forward and I didn’t want to read about it. I also didn’t believe they were siblings and I guess I didn’t want to go through however many books it would take to explore that. However, many people say the series is great overall and I own it, so might as well go through it. I plan on reading The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices. Those two seem wrapped up in each other. If I like those two, I will move onto The Dark Artifices.
Right now, fantasy series are what is the most interesting to me and this is what I have accessible.
I hope any kind of romance plot is not the biggest part of the plot. I understand it is pretty much unavoidable in books, especially YA series, but like, I do not care about romance plots. I just want the story.
Honestly, I wish I would have just read a summary for this because I didn’t gain any great bit of information that I did not have before plot wise. I am sure the only benefit is that smaller things will be more recognizable.

The book moves at a decent pace, and I can see why it would be interesting. Knowing what I know now, the painted tarot cards by her mother are a big clue about where The Mortal Cup is. I can’t remember if she hid it in a larger painting or in the tarot cards, I just remember that Jocelyn hid them in a painting.
I know that Luke is still a good guy, but I can see hints are being put in place to try to make him out as untrustworthy. He might have still been selfish though. I can’t remember if he was looking out for Clary after the attack, or just trying to keep himself alive. I think he was trying to figure out a way to help Jocelyn, but I can’t remember.
Knowing that I have the next book in the series, makes me more interested in reading this one. Knowing that I will figure out what happens next and getting to something unknown is fun. And I have been reading a lot of series lately. They are kind of what keeps me reading lately because I have something else to look forward to.
I’m rereading this so I can move on to the next book in the series. I read this nearly 7 years ago and felt kind of meh about it then. I was in a big time funk right after, so I never moved on with the series. I will give it another go since I own the rest of The Mortal Instruments series.
I cuddled up in my bed with my doggos and read for a bit.
Okay, so everyone is like just an ass. I am tiring of the protective Jace bit. Simon loves her and Luke loves her and want to protect her against everything and are okay with her making the choices she needs to make and Jace is a super aggressive/possessive dick acting like Clary only belongs to him. Fuck that. I know he has a better understanding of The Clave or at least he thinks he does because he has been involved most of of his life and Simon knows nothing and Luke is too far removed, but it doesn’t mean he should be able to control her. It is unacceptable behavior. That is some of that red flag stuff, a guy telling you what you can and can’t do.
I know from spoilers or at least I think I have it right, that Sebastian is actually Clary’s brother and that he is a bad dude. But he is being introduced as charming and otherworldly. I wonder if there have already been hints dropped to show who he is.
I wonder how long it will take for people to realize Simon didn’t come home. I am hoping the cat eyes Alec saw was Magnus trying to get in touch with him and the thing he wrote and burned was a message back to him. I care deeply for Simon and what happens to him and Luke. So, yeah I care about the Downworlders.
