With this title, I think we have most of the piece’s to solve the title puzzle (Spoilers)

Time passed slower in old age. Perhaps that was why Kincade wasn’t surprised to see James Bond when he’d read his obituary just a few months before. It hadn’t been the first obituary for James and he had doubted it would be the last. 

But whoever had control of his accounts had less faith. They’d sold the old lodge prematurely. 

Especially considering the destruction that was left in James’s wake. Kincade told the new owners he had been out of town that day. 

He also hadn’t been surprised at James’s skill with a gun. He just wanted to see what lie he spun. It was refreshing that he didn’t say anything. He’d known James had entered the Navy and made Commander. With the education and old blood he had, he should’ve made admiral. So obviously he’d changed careers. And it wasn’t surprising that he’d followed in his mother’s shoes. Spycraft was in his blood.

When James Bond walked into the office Tuesday morning, he was stopped by the double-oh secretary. 

“James?” Loela called as he walked past her door. He paused and walked in. “There’ll be an email for you but you have a meeting with some higher ups tomorrow afternoon that you cannot miss. I was instructed to make sure you knew.”

Strange. He didn’t usually get summoned to meetings unless there was a mission coming up and even then it was usually a meeting with Tanner and some staff from the Intelligence branch. “Know anything about the meeting?” he asked. 

“Only that it coincides with an official visit from the First Sea Lord. But that’s only office gossip.”

“You know I love your office gossip.”

“No, you love the Japanese sweets I keep in my desk drawer.” 

Bond laughed. “You figured me out. What’s on offer today?”

She leaned down and spun the dials to unlock her drawer. “You’re lucky, I got a new box from my friend today.” She lifted out a small bowl. “We’ve got mochi puffs, strawberry kit kats, candied yuzu peels.”

Bond grabbed one of each and continued to his office. He opened his email and saw the message Loela was referring to. 

He whistled low. It really was the higher ups. The First Sea Lord, the Chief of Staff Information Warfare, and the Flag Officer of Maritime Reserves. Not to mention M, and Q. The email did not contain any information on the purpose of the meeting, just a note that it would be in a private club room of Blades and dinner would be provided. His stomach rumbled in anticipation. He’d missed the renewal period this year due to a mission and was not currently a member. He missed the lobster and steak dinners.

It wasn’t the explosions. Alec was actually incredibly useful for fine tuning explosives. Although medical and the clean up crew believed otherwise, there was a method to his madness. He had different goals when he used different incendiaries. The developers in the explosive lab loved having a test subject in the field to help them out. It wasn’t the same doing consultations over skype. 

It wasn’t his clumsiness either. Although that was a hazard in R&D, most of the labs were designed so that a small bump of the hip wouldn’t cause mass chaos. Not to mention, he was only really clumsy compared the the other double-ohs. 

It certainly wasn’t his personality. While other agents saw the Q branch staff as beneath them, Alec knew how absolutely vital they were to his missions. He bantered with them and was even good friends with a few. One of them he was working with to help them practice their Russian. 

It mostly wasn’t his desire to touch everything. Prototypes, blueprints, the motorcycle that was sitting on the lift and get off of that right now 006. On days when he was really bad he had been shoved out of the branch with a scolding from a lab head. But it hadn’t resulted in a permanent ban. 

The reason why Alec had been banned from entering R&D was his crush on R. 

“Alec, that’s it.” Q stood between the two with his hands on his hips. “I can’t ban you from all of Q branch because you do need to get equipment, but I’m banning you from all of the R&D labs.”

“What? Why?”

“Because my second cannot focus with you anywhere near her!”

“No, she totally can,” he protested, looking to his girlfriend for help. 

R, however, knew she couldn’t deny it. “Can he be allowed in on Fridays?”

“Babe, you can definitely focus when I’m around. You’re a genius.”

“Q’s right. I can’t take my eyes off you and only partly because I know you’re going to cause trouble. “

“You’re saying I’m a sexy distraction?” Alec struck a pose and R giggled. 

“Stop it. Yes, you’re hot and I like watching you.”

Q rolled his eyes and interrupted. “Enough. You’re only proving my point. Alec, out of the labs. R, back to work. There’s always the break room if you want to flirt. But its making others uncomfortable and productivity is dropping.”

Mandatory leave. It was a phrase most double-ohs dreaded. Weeks of inactivity and being confronted with their barely lived in homes. And if they were too injured to travel, it also meant the psych department suddenly found tests they needed you to do. 

James Bond, however, was in rather high spirits. His last mission had been successful, he wasn’t injured badly, and he’d even made Q smile when most of his issued equipment was returned intact. Plus, he had treated himself to first class tickets to Miami, his second home.

Della met him at the airport in her Buick Riviera convertible. It was robin’s egg blue and always drew envious stares as they cruzed down the highway. He did just wish it was less humid. 

“So James, anything you want to do in your week off?” Della asked over the sound of the highway. 

“There was a bar you told me about last month I thought we could go to,” he shouted back. “Otherwise just relaxing on the beach and staying in shape. Last time I stayed with you two I gained half a stone.”

She laughed and her laugh was bright as the Florida sun. “You men and your body image. So tell me, Mr Bond. What is your workout routine?”

“Runs on the beach, swimming in the nude, and sweating over the Grill with Felix.”

“Oh he didn’t text you?”She waited until they were at a stoplight to speak. “Got called away on a mission. Out of the country so if you didn’t cross paths at the airport then you probably won’t see him this week.”

Bond’s good mood was instantly soured. He had been looking forward to a week with both of his partners. They hadn’t been able to spend much time together in the past three years. It was hard, with Felix and him working in different countries. Della also worked at a local restaurant so she couldn’t travel all the way to London as often as they wished. Next year, when he hit the double-oh retirement age, he’d finally move in with them. And Felix wouldn’t be far behind. 

“Then I suppose I’ll just have to cook for you. And Felix won’t complain about my breakfast.”

“That’s true. I’ll get spoiled by your cooking and then we’ll both have to run along the beach to work it off.”

They pulled up the drive of their home, under the shade of the tall evergreen trees. “I’m always happy to run by your side.”

“Now, your last mission proved a bit harder to crack than anticipated so I’ve built you something special.”

Bond couldn’t hide his excitement. Q was one of the best technomages in the world and his inventions were always amazing and creative. One his first mission, before Q had even been Q, he used a snorkel that converted the oxygen in the water to breathable oxygen. It had limits, sure, but it had given his a crucial advantage over the enemy divers who were connected to tanks via easily severed tubing.

Another mission, his life had been saved when Q was able to use even the dead cameras in the building to see the trap that was just around the corner. He couldn’t disable the weapons in the hands of the men, but he gave Bond the information he needed to choose a different plan of attack.

His last mission had been an escort mission and he’d been given a device that erased the location data of any photographs taken nearby. However, they had still passed by enough recogniseable locations that they had been followed.

There had been a week of frantic investigation in Q branch to figure out how they had tracked him. And although the mission had been a success, Q had still gone down to his lab with determination.

“I’ve made you a familiar,” Q announced.

“A familiar? Isn’t that just a thing for mages? Like your duck?”

Q reached over and stroked his metal duck next to his desktop. “Excuse you, Archibald is not a familiar. He is an ARtificial Coding Helper Imbued with Bonus Animated Lifelike Dramatics.”

“So it swears at your poor syntax. Whatever. I can do that.”

“Do you want your familiar or not?” Q crossed his arms and leaned back.

Bond sighed. “I’m sorry. Yes, I would like a familiar, though I’m not sure anymore I know what a familiar is.”

Courtney had warned them. She’d said she didn’t know what kind of animal that egg belonged to. She’d said it couldn’t be dangerous. But M had ordered them to construct a rough incubator and wait for it to hatch. 

Q set up a live feed to keep an eye on the large teardrop shaped egg. He had an inkling that this would be something more than they expected and he wanted record of it. 

His feed suddenly frizzed out at 4:07 on Sunday morning. At first he didn’t notice, he was trying to read a white paper on a new application for nanotech, but when he did he ran down to the lab immediately.

The sight that greeted him made him stop short in the doorway. First, there was a stranger in the lab. No, wait. Not a stranger. His Uncle Merlin. Second, on the table the egg lay in shards. Third, the creature which had hatched was purple and had wings. 

“Merlin?” Q asked in his best quartermaster voice. “What’s going on?”

The man turned and Q was shocked to see he had been crying. Though the huge smile splitting his face made it clear the cause was not sorrow. Merlin dashed away some of his tears. “Hey Q. Where’d you find the dragon?”
