" Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, born in October 1900-1978 was a leading activist during the Nigerian women’s anticolonial struggles. She is the famous Fela Kuti 's mother, the first lady to ride a car in Nigeria. She founded the Abeokuta Women’s Union (AWU) in 1946 with the aim of campaigning against price controls, which drastically limited the incomes of market women and for fair treatment. It also protests a special tax imposed by the local ruler, Sir Ladapo Ademola II for women in 1947. The AWU goals include greater educational opportunities for women and girls, enforcement of sanitary regulations and provision of health care and other social services for women thereby raising a high standard of living for the women, one of the most impressive women’s organizations of the twentieth century with a membership estimated to have reached up to 20,000 women, which fought to protect and further the rights of women. .
