Hey, Alyx. I'm a genderqueer student currently attending DA and I have joined their organization to establish gender nuteral bathrooms. But until then... I was wondering where I should use the restroom. Should I continue just using the girls? Should I use the mens if I am clearly meant to be one that day? I would really appreciate your suggestions for how to handle this.
Hey so, I havenât been at DA in a while so Iâm not sure what the feel is there right now as far as gender junk goes. When I went there, I identified pretty binary male and never used the restroom at school out of habit/not caring enough/training myself to not use bathrooms in public. I need you to assess your privilege at DA and understand the safety issues with using gendered bathrooms as a genderqueer person.
Also Iâd like to address some potentially problematic ideology. You said âShould I use the mens if I am clearly meant to be one that dayâ, which isnât really cool considering you might be associating gender expression with gender identity. Like, for you personally, I understand feeling centered in certain genders with how you dress or whatnot, but I would avoid expecting others to grasp or assume your identity based on your presentation, because you should never guess a personâs identity based on their appearance.Â
