FIVE STEPS TO A PERFECT COMPARE AND CONTRAST
soooo i used to have a lot of trouble with compare and contrast essays, but recently i’ve started to get the hang of it! i decided to upload a format and some pointers for any of y’all who had the same issues
FORMAT:
1. Introduction: State that both have similarities and differences and also the most obvious ones. Also include the theme you will be analyzing them based on.
2. Paragraph One: Similarities
a. Most relevant/important similarity
b. Evidence from the text
c. Explanation of the evidence
d. Next similarity
e. Evidence from the text
f. Explanation of the evidence
g. Various other similarities following the same PEE structure
3. Paragraph Two: Differences
a. Most relevant/important difference
b. Evidence from the text
c. Explanation of the evidence
d. Next difference
e. Evidence from the text
f. Explanation of the evidence
g. Various other differences following the same PEE structure
4. Paragraph Three: Connections
a. Connect the points in the previous paragraphs with the theme required
b. Give evidence and relative explanations for the above
5. Conclusion: Wrap it up by concluding that they are similar and different and the main ones, as well as a line that connects it to the theme required
POINTERS:
- Use something similar to a five paragraph essay structure
- Always follow the PEE structure when making a point
a. PEE: Point, evidence, explanation
- Should be (usually) between 350 and 800 words
- Add as many points as are relative to the theme required
- Analyze both texts in terms of the theme and how it’s expressed
