Can yoga training help you for weight loss?
The answer is YES – but this will not occur in the traditional way. You will not sweat and get exhausted a lot like in other physical activities; however, this does not mean you are not burning calories. This practice eventually will make you start losing weight.
How long it will take you?
The process can be different for each person, so I recommend you to be patient. Yoga is not meant exactly for weight loss. That was not the purpose of its creation. The weight loss is just one of the benefits you can get while practicing it correctly.
Some studies have observed weight loss even in people who practice yoga once a week, but this happened after a few years. If you want to start seeing the results sooner, I recommend you to practice every day if possible.
How much weight can you lose?
Well, this will depend on the amount of fat accumulated in you. With Yoga you will stimulate every part of your body and the first thing you will get rid of is fat, and at the same time you will strengthen your muscles. Besides, it stimulate the good performance of your organs, including the digestive system. This can solve problems like constipation and irritable bowel syndrome, which sometimes may be part of the cause for your weight problems.
How does it help for weight loss?
The first reason why you may notice weight loss is because yoga will reduce stress. A lot of people eat more when they are stressed and will reduce this bad habit. You will eat the amount of food you need to regain the energy your body has lost. My advice…eat healthier food.
Try to combine yoga practice with a diet based on fruits, vegetables, lean meats (if you are not vegetarian). I do not mean you have to follow a specific diet once you start doing yoga, or eat more or less. Just by starting to avoid processed foods, your body will respond better to the training, you will see results and notice the benefits (including weight loss), and your body will not feel lethargic during training.
Furthermore, training for weight loss might be a little bit different from.
For example: Yoga for meditation.
You have to choose a more vigorous yoga style, like power yoga. Try a class that challenges you and raises your heart beat. Also, you should attend to at least 4 or 5 sessions a week.
Another thing I personally noticed when practicing is that even if I gained weight, it was well distributed throughout my body, not only my belly as it used to be before. I researched about it and, apparently, it is due to fats tending to end up in areas where the levels of cortisol (also called the “stress hormone”) are higher like, yes, the stomach. As yoga reduces stress, it also reduces the levels of cortisol.
This is what we recommend for you…
If you are thinking about taking classes to lose weight, remember that it has to be the right one. Finally, as I always say, remember that yoga is about building a stronger connection between our body, mind and spirit, so you will learn to accept and love yourself and this includes your own body. Besides, you will be more aware about your body needs, so next time, instead of ending up in the kitchen packing a lot of food into your body when you are just feeling bored, you might drink a glass of water and go out for a walk or even go for a short session.
