Blind&Deaf : Narrative
Terror penetrates my mind while I tumble over my own chair. I wonder whether if this is a safe activity. All I have is a hand to guide me.
With uncertainty, I grant it permission to introduce me to familiar places. I took my step confidently, but the blindness makes my feet falter. My confidence fades while my mind starts to contradict the definition of familiarity. In a matter of seconds, my body smacks an object. Startlingly, I smear my hands over it to visualize its shape and texture. I vision it to be the white pillars that guards between each classroom, but I did not know that it feels like marble. It radiates a coldness while I embrace it uncomfortably. I slowly recover myself from the impact and follow the hand while touching the sides of the lockers with my remaining hand, feeling powerless and vulnerable. I hope that it will soon end.
I am far more vigilant of my surroundings now by distancing my body from the pillars. However, another bump hits the tips of my fingers and pain embeds itself onto me. My fingers pulsing as it invites adrenaline to my body. I reluctantly cry a few laughs, portraying that I’m fine. It won’t end very soon, so I should at least enjoy the agonizing experience. With bravery from my own frustration, I abandon the hand and rely on the walls. However, the walls that I imagine there, no longer feel like walls, but rather a smooth snowy surface when I pick up my speed. I hear a muffle chuckle, and I laugh a bit from my silly reaction. I place my hands on the cool surface and glide around it, pretending that I’m on it snowboarding. It would be wasteful if I give my fear attention, so I continue my journey. Another painful hit on my hand flung me back to reality. Obstinately, I deny that I am back and drown myself in imagination again.
This time I open the side door of my school, pretending that I’m on an island. The wind from my imaginary ocean brings a delightful flow that feels like someone is secretly counting the strands of my hair. The coolness tickles my expose neck. I emerge my body into it as if I fell into a pond as a fish taking my first breath underwater.
I’m just having a bit of fun is an understatement.
I am in my own world until I let the hand grab my wrist to return me back to the classroom and awaken me from my delusions. My unforgettable adventure ends. I untie the blindfold and unplug my earphones. Reality pierce through my mind.
The scene of people, objects and the light seems much more priceless than before.
