Now, this right here is a very difficult review for me. I have seen plastered all over the internet since this album dropped, how brilliant it is and how it is apparentlyĀ the bands ābest album since 2004ās A Snow Capped Romanceā. This band was one of the very first bands that infested the soundtrack to my teenage years; Iāve seen them play live around 6 times since I first discovered them, I own a physical copy of every album theyāve ever released and they still remain some of my prized possessions to this day. So as you can see I have very strong opinions on all of their material. If you donāt read the rest of the review at least understand my honest opinion here; its good, its very good indeed! But itās no A Snow Capped Romance.
The main thing that I can really say about the album as a whole is whereas with those first 3 albums there was a certain vibe present; bouncy, energetic, lyrically maybe not the most uplifting of words sometimes depressing even with stuff like āAt The End of AugustāĀ but it was still pretty explosive even though the tone was of a sad nature. This new stuff though was ā after many hours of listening ā pretty depressing plain and simple. The songs I actually like such as ā11.24.11ā³, āSwing the Nooseā, āSilencerā, āVanishā which has a very distinguished heavy tone yet slow pace has less than an impressionable effect on me nor an infectious melody, very much the same can be said for the song āSorrow Singsā although with a name like that what was I expecting? One of the saving graces here is āLightlessā, as soon as that track hit I was basted with a guitar tone I have grown so used to and those intertwining vocal lines from once upon a time brought teenage me much joy, itās got those distinguishing qualities matched with those from the Rest Inside The Flames years, āAlso am Iā almost falls into that category as well but theyāve tampered with the formula a little too much.
Itās not a bad album donāt get me wrong! I could listen to it a fair few times especially whilst driving as itās that sort of pace but itās so far removed from the good olā days. However looking on it now that means that they canāt overkill that longstanding style because theyāve switched gears and changed things making something new. āSilencerā, ā11.24.11ā and āSwing The Nooseā are songs that will be transferred into my favorite songs playlist and will damn well stay there! Just donāt get yourself into a mood that itās not the same style youāve possibly grown up with and give it a fair chance thatās all I can say.
