Hoffman’s book sheds (some) light on the lives and works of Mandelshon, Harrison, and Houris in Jerusalem in early 20th century. However, Hoffman leaves out an important part of the social texture she is writing about, the Muslim and Christian Arabs of the city and their contribution to the last shape it has gotten.
