TIKOLOSHE

A strange hairy monster from the traditions of the Xhosa people of South Africa. No taller than a baboon, and walking with the same odd gait, with long arms trailing, the Tikoloshe once lived only in the rivers of the Transvaal, but in more recent times has been seen in the Natal and even in the city of Johannesburg. The creature can make itself invisible or appear like a human being.

The Tokoloshe is an evil spirit in Zulu mythology. A hairy, dwarf-like being, Tokoloshes delight in causing trouble and scaring humans. At their worst, they can cause people to fall ill and even die.

Tokoloshes can become invisible by drinking water. They can be banished by a spiritual healer known as an ngana. Some believe that Tokoloshes can be summoned by evil wizards to attack their enemies.

There are many different groups of peopl ein the African continent whether it would be a country or a tribe or even just a small nomadic group. The one thing I've found is that with so many different types of people there are also just as many monsters that they have. Some monsters are shared, others are specific to that group of people, and some are continental.

Grootslang: This creature is a giant snake figure that grows up to about 60 ft long. It dwells within caves and it is said that though they guard their dwellings well the caves are filled with diamonds that no one is completely knowledgeable about. Grootslang are a mix of snake and elephant and was said to have been split up into either species due to gods seeing them as being too powerful of a beast. Impundulu: The people of Pondo, Zulu, and Xhosa have the Impundulu within their folklore. This is a South African bird that is the size of a human and brings about lightning and storms. It's name is quite literally Lightning Bird. These birds and their eggs have medicinal properties however they are known to willingly attack and drink human blood as they are also seen with witches or witch doctors. There have been times this bird has disguised itself as a human to walk amongst people. Ninki Nanka: This monster dwells in Gambia River and is a dragonic creature with the body of a crocodile, head of a horse with accompanied horns, and the neck like that of a giraffe. Its grows to be 30 to 50 ft long. Many people have claimed to have found bits and pieces of their scales but all of them coming up empty handed on that matter. Tikoloshe: From Zulu lore, shaman summon these little creatures when they feel they have been wronged or they wish to pester their enemies. Tikoloshe are small, hairy humanoid creatures that can become invisible by swallowing a single pebble. They can cause trouble ranging from just small, irritating annoyances to serious illness that may or may not lead to death. Adjule: This is a canine called a Bush Dog. Males and females have two different names and they live in the Sahara Desert in Northern Africa. At two and a half feet tall, they travel in groups of three to thirteen and are not known to attack humans just cause a fright through existence. Nandi Bear: This creature has been spotted all over the continent and has many different names depending on what group of people sight it. It's described as a mix of a bear and a hyena and stands at four to six feet tall with a reddish brown or almost black brown fur color. It is nocturnal and is known for killing humans on the night of the new moon or when the moon is not visible. It has been shot at by westerners or burned in houses as they were trapped.
