Got one of my tiels her new cage today! Best part was someone put the wrong cage label inside it and I got 25$ off a tiel cage thought to be a parakeet cage. So happy I didn't spend my whole check on a cage and I can probably seek out another perch or foraging toy for her as well!

I did give them their seed with the pellet mix, I was only doing pellet only to see if they'll actually nibble at it. I'm glad they're taking a liking to roudybush because mook didn't really like zupreeme

I was the anon with the seed/pellet mixing question. So I'm cold turkying my tiels for a few minutes to see how they take to the roudybush before I add the seed, I gave them a pellet to taste and Marlow ate them right up, mook was a bit hesitant but once he tried it he came back for another piece. Mook is now back for his second trip to the bowl and I think he likes it! Marlow is distracted and probably thinking I'm just gonna hand feed her the food. But this was faster than I expected!
sounds great, do keep an eye on their weight, if they start to drop or don’t seem to be eating as much do give them seeds back and slowly convert, it’s very easy for birds to drop too much weight and going cold turkey may cause some birds to go on an off pellets or just starve themselves because they don’t want to eat it. I hope things continue to run smoothly!
Do some birds just don't know how to take a proper bath? All our birds refuse to bathe in bigger bowls and prefer their water bowls for a nice bath. Our conure, even as little as the bowl is compared to her, she gets soaked and overall a good bath. Our quaker has a bigger bowl that he can get his whole butt in, but only does he stick his beak in, shake, and stick only one leg in. I gotta mist him to help as with my tiel that does the same thing. The 'too does it in about 5 bowls worth.Weird birb
Birds tend to bathe however they want, all the p’lets bathe by standing on the edge and shoving their heads in, only one of them actually gets in the tub and they’ll hang on to the edge with one nail the whole time. As long as they get clean it really doesn’t matter all too much
Mooks been losing a bit of feathers recently, I don't think he's plucking as its mostly down feathers and he even has a down feather on his neck that's just hasn't fallen out. Another reason why I think he's just molting is that he has a couple spots on him that's kinda poofy, like you see some feather popping out but its only fluff from the bottoms. If it helps I could submit a feather, I just wanna make sure he's just molting, though he's only 3 months? Isn't it a bit early for field?
Just sounds like a moult, birds lose feathers year round and their true moults are affected by numerous factors and are commonly thrown off their regular course due to artificial light, inadequate UV light, irregular seasonal nutrients, or something wrong with their health. Babies will moult out their down feathers fairly rapidly as they’re the oldest feathers, they’re baby feathers, they’re weak and they need to grow in their adult insulative feathers if they hope to survive the following months, the rest of the feathers would typically moult at around 6 months of age.

uneven, asymmetrical feather loss
over preening, obsession with preening
using force, spending a lot of time on one feather
removed feathers may be tattered, broken, missing half, and sometimes bloody
the bird may make squawks or cries
sporadic preening, sudden irritation, panicked preening

How do you encourage your birds to take baths? Mine just has grubby tail feathers from dragging them through his poo and hasn't really cleaned it himself, I put a container of water in his cage to see if he'll take a bath but he just looks at it or nibble at the edge of the bowl. Would misting work or what else could I try?

Mooks generally a good bird, hangs around, as good as a three month old baby can be at this time. I recently got another tiel, their both in the same room seperate cages. No idea on sex or age this one is but mook starting singing to them, or at least talking with chirps I've never heard him talking in. Either way he seems okay with the new ones presence. I take him out of his cage, he fly's around and now likes to land on the others cage, ignores me, wants to nip and get upset. Never really bit
There’s no actual question in this message so I don’t quite know what you’re asking. Mooks is likely displaying these aggressive signals because of hormonal reasons or because the new bird is interesting and doesn’t want you to bother him while he checks out the other bird. Separating the birds and working with them individually will help reduce that aggression then in a room away from cages you can slowly allow them to see one another while responding to you so they learn to interact with you as well as one another without aggressive needs. Over time you’d be able to work up to having them both out around the cages.

Are tiels or any bird for this matter afraid of thunderstorms? Mook is handling it very well but he's really quiet and covered up. Since we sleep on the top floor its super loud and I'm afraid a roar of thunder may scare him. What should we do in these types of severe weather? I have a sheet covering his cage with a side of the curtain so the flashes of lightning won't be so bright for him
Many birds are, ‘tiels in particular tend to be very prone to a variety of frights and usually require a nightlight and soft music playing to help keep them calm and not startled by unexpected situations at night. Some birds are just fine with them so you may not have a problem but I would spend the first little bit of the night just keeping an eye on him and seeing how he’s responding, if he’s calm he’ll probably be just fine. For birds who are reacting poorly to these situations it’s usually best to comfort them and relax them prior to placing them in a cage, having a nighlight on, playing some music that will help the weather blend in with the music so it isn’t so unexpected, covering windows, and having them in the most sound-proofed room. Once they’ve been put to bed just listen to them for a little while and perhaps stay within earshot in case they do have a fright so you can calm them down. If they are prone to frights it’s best to remove any perches from the centre of the cage so they don’t smash in to anything on the way down, talk in a calm voice, turn on the lights and let them relax before trying to open the door (unless the bird is obviously wanting out at that time).
It’s really going to depend on your bird, mine haven’t had any issues with thunder or lightning, usually catches them off guard when it starts up but they quickly get used to it and are fine for the rest of the night. Other birds may react very poorly and need more of those safety measures in place.
