Nami x Lunari!Reader Drabble
At the bottom of Mount Targon, you had reached the coast where the land meets the sea. You turned to Nami who looked at you hesitantly. It was clear that whatever conflicting emotions you were feeling, she was feeling too.
Ever since the Aspect of the Moon fled Mount Targon, the elders officially assigned you with the title of Seeker, your one goal being to search for Diana so that she will guide your people. Along your travels, you ran into Nami, the Marai out of water who looked for the same individual. Her reason being so that she could gain a moonstone that would save her people from the monsters of the abyss. You never asked her for more details than what she offered you, for every time she mentioned the depths of the waters, a thousand-yard stare would overtake her and she'd go into a shell-shocked daze. You simply accepted that the two of you had aligning interests, so you went together.
Fortunately for Nami, with the use of your abilities harnessed by the power of the moon, the two of you managed to find another way to procure a moonstone that didn't need the Aspect of the Moon. Unfortunately, this meant the end of your time together.
“Surely you can take a break, come with me to the waters! We have special techniques to allow your type to breathe underwater,” Nami urged.
You smiled bitterly. Your ego wouldn't allow you to tell her how much you wanted to join her. And most importantly, you doubted your devotion to the Lunari would let you either. The elders have given you a mission, the Aspect of the Moon is still out there and the actions of your people depend on you finding her. It was a matter about the survival of your spiritual family and all you stood for, you couldn't be so selfish as to join Nami. How would the Lunari even react if they learnt you fell in love with a Marai?
“I'm sorry, Nami, but I need to keep searching. I'm going to have to go further than Targon at this rate,” you muttered. “It'll be... an adventure to say the least.”
“I'll come with you!” Nami replied. “The Solari will be hunting down the Aspect of the Moon, right? And so they'll be hunting after you!”
“They have their own Aspect to fret about,” you replied. “I'll be fine. And besides, you have your own people to save.”
You noticed her face drop at the reminder, seemingly berating herself for forgetting. You didn't blame her though, there were many times Nami's presence made you forget you were actually on a mission, she was simply that delightful to be around.
Nami suddenly took your hands in hers, practically lunging towards you.
“You'll come back to me, right?”
You took a step back. You refused to make empty promises.
“I need to find the Aspect of the Moon, and then I have to protect my people, just like you,” you replied. While Nami was at the bottom of the mountain, in the bright seas, you will be making your way further up Mount Targon with your people, to take over the land that was rightfully yours. Your heart ached. “I think it's time we part.”
Nami eased back in to the water, her hands slipping away from yours. But she didn't turn back, her eyes fixed on yours. You searched her face, remembering her features, never knowing when you'll see her again.
Her eyes widened as you said her name before you could even stop yourself. You didn't mean to interrupt her departure and you silently cursed yourself for letting your impulses take a hold of you. You swallowed, thinking of the hypothetical ways this scenario could go. In a moment of silence, you thought of what would happen if you told her those three little words that were on your mind. Had you been reading the signs wrong or will she respond to you in kind? If you said those words, you would probably join her by the waves and leave behind the world on land. Just for a few hours, possibly a few days of absolute joy with the one you love. And then you'd have to resurface and resume your mission. It was so tempting. The three little words were just on the tip of the tongue, they would feel so delicious to say...
You didn't meet her eyes but your heart still broke as you saw her crestfallen face in your peripheral. You told yourself this was the right decision, you had sworn an oath to the moon.
“You too,” Nami whispered back, her voice trembling.
You sent her a shaky nod, before cowardly heading back to the mountain.
