Thursday Tea Time! Of all the Meissen tea sets in the family, I happen to love the Contemporary set the most today. Meissen quality is simply unparalleled, and the cups beautifully retain the heat of organic Matcha Gyokuro. I especially love serving tea in the Meissen Contemporary set when I invite over my black friend Avery, her approval of my tastes is like scrawling an A+ in indelible ink on my forehead. As a rule, I tend to avoid three topics of discussion when seated for a meal or tea service: sex, religion, and politics. Naturally these are the three topics everyone offers up for immediate discussion. I tell Avery how I wish for the days when decent, upper-class individuals could simply gather around a table and have conversation about gentler topics, like the farmhands or the upcoming ball we would be hosting. Avery stops me. “That’s ‘Downton Abbey’ you’re referencing.” I could swear a kinder, gentler time must have existed at some point in history, and not just some fictionalized, hyperbolic string of nostalgia generated by film and television. Avery simultaneously references sex and politics by wanting to discuss the current legislation in Texas about bathrooms. Senate Bill 6 would require all Texans to use the bathroom that corresponds to the sex on their birth certificate in public schools and in government-funded buildings. The bill would also overrule any local anti-discrimination laws that allow lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students to use the bathroom that matches their gender identity. Avery lifts her tea cup. “I’m trying to think of all the times my life as a woman has ever been in danger due to a transgender person using a bathroom.” Nothing comes to mind but I tend to ignore politics because I only want to know about happy things! “When I think of all the times my life as a woman has been in danger because of a white man, well, how long will this Meissen Contemporary cup retain the tea’s heat?
